Few things interrupt a busy accounting day like an unexpected QuickBooks Desktop error. The code on the screen can look cryptic, but each one points to a specific type of problem. Once you know the category, the fix is usually straightforward.
This cheat sheet groups the most common QuickBooks Desktop error codes by what you were doing when they appeared.
Errors When Opening a Company File
Error 6123, 0
QuickBooks can’t open or restore the company file. This is usually caused by a damaged file, a blocked network connection, or a corrupted network data file. Try opening the file from a local folder and running QuickBooks File Doctor. Restore a backup if the file is damaged.
Error 80070057: “The Parameter Is Incorrect”
This appears when opening a company file, most often because of incorrect folder permissions or a file that has been damaged. Check that your Windows user account has full access to the folder, and run File Doctor from the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
The 6000 Series (6000, 6150, 6190 and others)
These errors share the same theme: QuickBooks can’t access the company file as expected. Copy the file to a local folder, confirm it has the .QBW extension, and rename the .TLG and .ND files so QuickBooks can generate fresh ones.
Errors in Multi-User Mode
Error H202 and H505
QuickBooks can’t connect to the computer hosting your company file. Check that only the server has hosting turned on, make sure the QuickBooksDBXX and QBCFMonitorService services are running, and confirm your firewall allows QuickBooks through.
Errors When Starting or Installing QuickBooks
Error 3371
QuickBooks can’t load the license data it needs to start. Update Windows, run the Install Diagnostic Tool, and rename the entitlement data file so QuickBooks can rebuild it.
Error 1603 and 1642
These stop QuickBooks from installing or updating. The cause is often a damaged Microsoft component or leftovers from an older install. Repair the Microsoft components, then run the Install Diagnostic Tool or perform a clean install.
Errors When Updating or Running Payroll
The 15XXX Series (15101, 15106, 15215 and others)
These show up when you download payroll or program updates. Run QuickBooks as an administrator, check your system date and time, and make sure your security software isn’t blocking the download.
PS032 and PS038
PS032 typically points to a problem verifying your payroll subscription or updating the tax table, while PS038 usually means paychecks are stuck in “online to send” status. Confirm your subscription is active, download the latest payroll update, and check the status of the affected paychecks.

- Don’t let your company file grow unchecked. Archive old data when it’s safe to do so.
